We Bought a Place Upstate
At the beginning of lockdown in 2020 I was watching an Instagram video of an influencer crying as she shared how she had been stuck in her apartment for weeks without any outside contact. I then watched as people in an Italian city stepped onto their balconies with wine cups on long poles so they could cheers without contact.
At the beginning of 2021, a year after the pandemic had begun, 99% of the people I knew in New York City had fled, many of them starting new lives in the country. I heard stories of countless people going after long buried passions, such as gardening or even starting a farm.
